Sunflower oil
Sunflower oil is a non-volatile oil pressed derived from sunflower seeds. The oil can be used in food as a frying oil and as an emollient in cosmetic formulations. (1)
Sunflower oil may help
- Reduce inflammation
- Promote skin health
- Lower cholesterol
- Support brain Function
Benefits
1) Reduces inflammation
It contains vitamin E or alpha-tocopherol, which helps to eradicate free radicals, reduce inflammation and improve our general health. The oil’s anti-inflammatory properties may benefit individuals with arthritis by reducing pain and stiffness.
2) Promotes skin health
The anti-inflammatory properties of sunflower oil may help individuals with acne, eczema, psoriasis and other skin conditions.
3) Lowers cholesterol
According to WebMD, research shows that sunflower oil in the diet can lower total cholesterol and “bad” cholesterol (LDL) in individuals with high cholesterol. (2)
High cholesterol is linked to atherosclerosis which is a narrowing of the arteries due to a build-up of plaque. Atherosclerosis prevents the natural flow of blood to the body, which can cause heart attacks, strokes and other health issues.
4) Supports brain Function
Sunflower oil could help to promote brain function, help increase concentration and control hyperactivity.
In a study, children with ADHD consumed n-3 PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acids) supplements and had reduced ADHD symptoms. (3)
Sunflower oil works well with
- Devil’s Claw to alleviate arthritis and related conditions
- Cod liver oil for cardiovascular and joint health
- Fish oils to support healthy brain function, memory and concentration
Some things to consider
Frying sunflower oil produces chemicals known as aldehydes which can contribute to heart disease and cancer. Olive oil and rapeseed oil produced far fewer aldehydes than sunflower oil. Using unrefined sunflower oil as a salad dressing is a great way to take advantage of its health benefits. (4)
