Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 or Co-Q10 is a vitamin-like substance sometimes referred to as ubiquinone. The body needs Co-Q10 to convert carbohydrates and fats into adenosine triphosphate (ATP) energy. ATP is energy created at a cellular level and may have antioxidant properties. According to Oregon State University, you can avoid Co-Q10 deficiency by eating a healthy and balanced diet. (1)
food sources of Coenzyme Q10 include
Heart, liver and kidney, pork, beef and chicken, Trout, herring, mackerel and sardine, Spinach, cauliflower and broccoli, Oranges and strawberries, Soybeans, lentils and peanuts, sesame seeds and pistachios, Soybean and canola oil. (2)
The body naturally produces Co-Q10, but free radicals can hinder the process. Its creation reduces as we get older.
Coenzyme Q10 may help
- Boost energy
- Support heart health
- Slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease
- Strengthen gums
Benefits
1) Boosts energy levels
Coenzyme Q10 is in every living cell and may help provide the energy our body needs to function. It may also help to improve mitochondria function in cells. According to reports, Co-Q10 supplements may increase energy levels.
2) Supports heart health
Co-Q10 could help to maintain healthy heart function. Statins can deplete the body’s stores of Co-Q10 so it may benefit individuals who take statins to control cholesterol. According to the Mayo Clinic, studies show that it can improve symptoms of congestive heart failure. (3)
3) Slows the progression of Alzheimer’s disease
Mitochondria are the primary energy source for the brain cells. Poor mitochondrial function can cause oxidative damage and kill cells and may contribute to Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and other illnesses. Co-Q10 can reduce oxidative damage and may support mitochondrial function. Ultimately, Co-Q10 may reduce the progression of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
4) Healthy Gums
It may be an effective topical or systemic treatment for periodontitis or swollen gums. Some dentists may recommend Co-Q10, which can be added to toothpaste, as a product for gum health. The substance may work as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E. (4)
Coenzyme works well with
- Omega 3 fish oils to promote heart health
- Multivitamins to improve general well-being and boost energy levels
- Vitamin C to support the nervous system and increase energy
