Liquorice DGL
Liquorice DGL (Deglycyrrhizinated liquorice), comes from the liquorice root also known as DGL. According to Natalie Silver from Healthline “most liquorice comes from Asia, Turkey, and Greece.” (1)
Liquorice contains glycyrrhizic acid, which has been reported to cause side effects when eaten regularly in large quantities, such as hypertension and high blood pressure.
Glycyrrhizin (the active ingredient) is extracted from the liquorice root to produce Deglycyrrhizinated liquorice, in order to make it safe for consumption over longer periods.
For those who are not at risk of consuming natural liquorice, which contains glycyrrhizic acid (GZA), it has been reported to have anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antiviral and immune-boosting properties (2)(3). In studies, it has been reported to have similar benefits on animals (4)(5).
