Boils are painful, pus-filled bumps that form under the skin when bacteria infect and inflame one or more of your hair follicles. Boils (or furuncles) usually start as red, tender lumps. The lumps quickly fill with pus, growing larger and more painful until they rupture and drain
Causes
Boils and carbuncles are caused by a type of bacteria known as Staphylococcus aureus (staph bacteria). Staph bacteria usually live harmlessly on the surface of the skin or in the lining of the nose. However, if they get inside the skin, they can trigger skin infections, such as boils.
